Find vetted Nordic startup deal flow

Consistent, high-quality deal flow in the Nordics is less about volume and more about seeing the right companies early — with real numbers attached. Here is a practical five-step approach.

1. Define your thesis before you source

Good deal flow starts with a clear filter: the stages, sectors and cheque sizes you actually invest in. Without it, every deck looks plausible and screening eats your week.

Write your thesis down in one or two sentences and share it. Founders, co-investors and platforms can only send you relevant companies if they know what you are looking for.

2. Go where Nordic founders actually are

The Nordics produce outsized startup output for their size, but the best companies rarely sit on public lists. Combine several channels: angel networks, accelerator demo days, university and research spinouts, and other investors who share deals outside their focus.

Warm referrals from founders you have backed remain the highest-quality source — ask your portfolio who they would bet on.

3. Screen on data, not on deck polish

A beautiful deck tells you the founder can design slides. What matters is the underlying numbers: revenue or users, growth, burn, runway — and whether those numbers are updated regularly.

Ask for monthly KPI updates early. A founder who shares real numbers every month is easier to diligence and usually easier to work with after the investment.

4. Check the funding landscape around the company

Nordic startups often combine equity with public funding — Business Finland, Vinnova, EU programmes and national grants. A company using non-dilutive funding well has a longer runway and a team that can execute on applications.

Ask which grants the company has won or is pursuing. It signals both credibility and how far your cheque will go.

5. Move fast once you see fit

Good Nordic rounds close quickly, and the best founders choose their investors. When a company matches your thesis, book the call, do the work and give a clear yes or no within days, not months.

Even a fast no builds your reputation — founders talk to each other, and respectful speed brings you the next referral.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sourcing without a written thesis, then drowning in irrelevant decks.
  • Screening on deck design instead of current KPI numbers.
  • Ignoring public grant funding as a signal of execution and runway.
  • Taking months to decide — and teaching founders to go elsewhere.
